OVERVIEW
Ever find yourself with a single skein of a very special yarn? Perhaps it was a gift, or you bought it as a vacation souvenir. This cowl or scarf is a great way to show off that beautiful yarn!
Knit in a simple and completely reversible stitch pattern, your cowl or scarf will look great no matter how you twist and wrap it. While the sample shown is a longish cowl, we’ve included instructions on how to use this pattern to make either a cowl or a scarf. We’ve also added directions on customizing the length and width.
While this is a great first project for a beginner, this is also a pattern you can turn to again and again. This is also a FABULOUS way to use a skein of hand spun yarn...whether you bought it at a fiber festival or spun it yourself!
ENJOY!
MATERIALS
Yarn: 300 yds DK weight yarn
The sample was made with the following: One 4 oz bump of WoolTribe Yarn 100% Super Wash Merino Combed Top in Firepit hand spun into a DK weight 2-ply yarn.
These quantities will make a cowl the size shown in photos. If you choose to make a longer scarf or cowl, more yarn will be needed
Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles, or size needed to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Scrap yarn and crochet hook for provisional cast on, tapestry needle, blocking tools
GAUGE
24 sts and 28 rows = 4" in Garter Rib stitch, after blocking.
Exact gauge is not critical to the success of this project, but if you work to a different gauge it will change both the finished measurements and the amount of yarn required.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Circumference: 45"
Width: 7"
These are the measurements of the sample shown. Instructions are provided to customize both the width and the circumference/length.
